A forest in New Zealand – More than meets the eye

Take a look at this forest. Notice anything strange about this forest? Well, take a closer look. Let me tell you something about this forest. As late as 1940, this was farm land!  However, farmers living on this hill decided to call it a day, as the land was “difficult” and not yielding the harvest they desired.  So, trees were planted in this area to convert it back into a forest!

The guide then told us to stay quiet and listen for the birds. We did, and try as we could, we could not hear any birds chirping, and that was what the guide wanted us to know. They have yet to be successful in drawing birds to this sanctuary. There were too many rabbits and possums in the forest for the birds to want to come and stay.

My recent recent vacation to NZ left me with a deep respect for the country.  Throughout the trip, I got a sense of people who possessed a strong sense of identity and culture.  NZ is a beautiful country indeed.
